Inspired by the work of printmaker Mark Hearld this is a fun family work-along creating quirky, printed, hanging birds that can be used as decorations or fancy greetings cards.
We will start by creating painted, sponged backgrounds to make a colourful base to work on. Using the template provided, we will then trace and cut out our bird shapes (a simpler version will be available for younger children) and decorate it using stamps made from craft foam, polystyrene, or even vegetables!
We will embellish our bird further with pens, glitter and metallic paint, and a smattering of spattering! The final touches are achieved with patterned paper on the underside of the wings and tail and a ribbon to hang it by. There you have it……your own quirky bird!
A great project for ages 5 to 105! Processes can be adapted and simplified for younger participants and the more experienced can have fun creating a lovely layered printed bird….or even a whole flock. You might not finish the entire project in the time we have, but you'll have all the skills you need to finish off in your own time.
