Making paper cloth is the perfect mixed media technique for upcycling all those pieces of paper ephemera you have been keeping (receipts, labels, maps etc) but not been quite sure what to do with.   Your sheets of paper cloth can then be used in many projects including a handmade soft cover notebook, sewn collage pictures, and lots of other items.

Janina will start the workshop by showing some simple techniques for decorating your own blank papers. Then she will show how to make sheets of paper-cloth by laminating your paper ephemera, decorated papers, recycled, and tissue papers onto muslin.

If you'd like to work-along during this first stage, you're very welcome too - but it is good to note that it can get a bit messy!  The rest of the class will be a demonstration only, as Janina works with pre-made samples whilst the newly create sheets are left to dry.

Fully dried paper cloth sheets can be coloured with paints and inks. Janina will show you techniques for stenciling and making your own foam block stamps too.

The sheets cross the boundary between paper and fabric and are very sturdy. They can be easily cut, glued and sewn to make functional and decorative items.  Janina will demonstrate step by step how to make a pamphlet stitch book with one of the sheets. She will also show examples of other things that can be made including stitched collages which have been embellished with beads and sequins, to give you some more ideas.

This is an ideal course if you want to try something a bit different and are happy to experiment with the materials.
