The most eye-catching calligraphy contains all those swirly bits that experts make look so easy. But we all have to start somewhere, and a step-by-step approach is the most helpful. Learn the simple starting points for extending ascenders and descenders into elegant gestural marks and practise the flowing strokes that enhance capitals, always popular for writing names.
Starting with an overview of basic italic, we’ll move swiftly on to extending the ascenders & descenders, noting how many variations are possible once you’ve got started. The capitals have their own unique secrets, soon exposed, and then combining the two we can examine how best to assemble these to create name labels, titles, and short quotations.
Flourished Italic when done with confidence is beautiful to behold, and once you appreciate the underlying secrets, it’s just a matter of regular practice – like ballet dancers – that will give your work freedom and liveliness.
