In this two-part class we will be blending the tradition of Islamic geometry with the freedom of comtemporary watercolours. We will explore a special kind of eightfold patterns, one that is made of overlapping and interweaving arcs.
We'll start by familiarising ourselves with the tools and a run through of the processes and practicalities involved. Samira will share lots of examples for inspiration.
On a blank sheet of paper we will then draw a series of lines and circles to construct the underlying grid. From this underlying grid, we then draw the arcs needed to create this pattern. We will outline and trace the repeating unit and then transfer and repeat it to create a bigger composition. Finally, we add a contemporary feel by bringing them to life with watercolours and gouache on watercolour paper.
